Bloomfield Hills Marian players and coaches pose with their MHSAA Division 3 championship trophy on Saturday.

Bloomfield Hills Marian won its first-ever Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 girls golf championship, beating defending champion Flint Powers Catholic by three strokes at The Meadows Golf Course at Grand Valley State University on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Marian, which finished as state runner-up in Division 2 in 2017, came in at 335 on day one and shot 354 on day two for a total of 689 to hold off Powers, which only graduated one golfer from last year's championship team.

Marian junior Shannon Kennedy won medalist honors for the second time in her high school career, shooting a blazing 3-under par 143. She

was joined by senior Marlo Hudson (170), junior Lauren Sass (189) and junior Sarah Kuredjian (189) in the state championship scoring.

"We've got girls who work hard," Marian co-coach Cathie Fritz told reporters. "Marlo Hudson is our only senior, Shannon has worked hard the last 12 months and we've got multiple juniors who we knew would keep us in the hunt."

Marian co-coach Leon Braisted said Kennedy's individual title was no surprise to him. "It's not about her; she's very humble," he said. "She's that precise. It's important to her to win, but she really wanted the team to win."
