2019 MHSAA Division 1 girls golf champion: Northville

Despite graduating its top two players, Northville repeated as Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 girls golf champion. Northville posted the low score on each day of the final, coming in with a 646 total, 32 shots better than Grosse Pointe South. “I give a lot of credit to the returning players. They all re-committed themselves to working hard and came into the season with an eye on defending their title,” Northville coach Chris Cronin told reporters. “The key for us this season has been our incredible depth. I have been able to roll a variety of lineups in tournaments and matches and, no matter the combination, the girls have produced results.” Northville placed four golfers in the top 15, led by Sedona Shipka (158), Sufna Gill (161), Katelyn Tokarz (164) and Samantha Coleman (165). That powered the squad to the first back-to-back championships in Division 1 since Plymouth in 2012-13.

2019 MHSAA Division 2 girls golf champion: Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern

Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern used its strong depth to win its third straight Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 girls golf championship. Northern posted the low score on each day of the final, coming in with a 648 total, 26 shots better than South Lyon. “I’ve said this many times before, but it is just as true this year for us: State championships are not won at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions on a team, they are won with great scores at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions,” head coach Kent Graves told reporters. “Team depth is our biggest advantage.” Returning all-staters Lilia Henkel (153) and Anna Fay (157) both finished in the top four individually while Ava Frost (165) placed 10th and Rylee Walters came in at 173. “They all have worked tirelessly on their game since our state championship tournament last year,” Graves said. “Being a state champion is a great feeling and they all wanted it again. I doubt that any of my players have taken a day off from golf since last spring.”

2019 MHSAA Division 3 girls golf champion: Bloomfield Hills Marian

Bloomfield Hills Marian won its first-ever Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 girls golf championship, beating defending champion Flint Powers Catholic by three strokes. Marian, which finished as state runner-up in Division 2 in 2017, came in at 335 on day one and shot 354 on day two for a total of 689 to hold off Powers, which only graduated one golfer from last year's championship team. Marian junior Shannon Kennedy won medalist honors for the second time in her high school career, shooting a blazing 3-under par 143. She was joined by senior Marlo Hudson (170), junior Lauren Sass (189) and junior Sarah Kuredjian (189) in the state championship scoring. "We've got girls who work hard," Marian co-coach Cathie Fritz told reporters. "Marlo Hudson is our only senior, Shannon has worked hard the last 12 months and we've got multiple juniors who we knew would keep us in the hunt." Marian co-coach Leon Braisted said Kennedy's individual title was no surprise to him. "It's not about her; she's very humble," he said. "She's that precise. It's important to her to win, but she really wanted the team to win."
